Text Box: 2.to talk directly with the staff, then the SPRC member can offer to share the concern on their behalf, using their name. (Unidentified concerns or complaints only serve to increase anxiety and paranoia, and prevent the staff person from understanding the full context of the concern.)

3.    If the person refuses to be identified by name, then the issue is dropped and goes no further.

4.    Signed letters written to the SPRC regarding staff members will be shared with the particular staff member named, as well as with their supervisor. Anonymous letters will not be addressed.

5.    If resolution cannot be achieved between the person and the staff, the issue will be discussed at the next SPRC meeting in an effort to devise an acceptable solution for all involved. The goal of all actions in this regard is reconciliation and the restoration of an atmosphere of Christian collegiality that will enhance the ministry of the church.

The Staff-Parish Relations Committee wants to reassure everyone that we have not been receiving lots of complaints or concerns. This policy is simply a proactive step toward keeping everything open, honest and above board. If you have any questions, feel free to talk with Lee Endicott, who chairs SPRC this year, or Dianne Peters. Members of the SPRC are:  Bob Anthony, Ed Armstrong, Barbara Bachelor, Jeanene Carver, Lee Endicott, Marsha Funk, Sally Hayes, and Kate Lott.

Food, Fellowship and a
Window to Our Future

The Administrative Council is inviting the whole Crown Heights family to a very special event on Sunday, May 18th, following second service. Our pastor and a special guest will be presenting a “big picture” report on where we are and where we could go next as a faith community. There’s lots of good news to share and some exciting possibilities to consider! We want you to be in on the ground floor as we listen for God’s call for our future. Plan to bring a dish to share and join us in the Fellowship Hall for Dianne’s “Vision Casting for Crown Heights.” Child care will be provided.

Alzheimer's TrainingText Box: Creating and Maintaining Christian Community

Creating and maintaining a sense of true Christian community is a constant process of fostering healthy, honest, open, caring communication within our church family. Matthew 18:15-17 provides us with the model for resolving differences. It focuses on encouraging people to “speak the truth in love” to the person with whom they are having the difficulty, rather than talking behind the other’s back. It emphasizes the goals of understanding, forgiveness and reconciliation. All families have disagreements! This is normal and healthy. The way we choose to handle our disagreements can make the difference between a healthy, vital church and a self-destructive, dying church.

Our Staff-Parish Relations Committee recently met and discussed guidelines for how they would handle concerns or disagreements involving the church’s staff, including the pastor. They wanted you to be aware of what they and staff will do to facilitate caring and honest communication in our church family.

1.       If a person expresses a concern to an SPRC member, the first question will be, “Have you shared this with the pastor/staff member?” If not, the SPRC member will offer to go with the person to discuss the matter. If such a discussion has already taken place, the SPRC member will inquire about the outcome. Then he or she will encourage a second discussion with a third person present—either the staff member’s supervisor or a member of SPRC. This often helps to clarify areas of miscommunication or misunderstanding.

If a person is simply too uncomfortable or upset

Text Box: Do you know someone who is suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia? Are you uncomfortable around them or uncertain how to communicate with them? This is a common reaction among many people, but it doesn’t have to stay that way.
We are very pleased to have Tiffany Wagner, from the Alzheimer’s Association, an expert in this area, coming to conduct a simple training time on Wednesday evening, May 28, at 6:30

Text Box: May Sermons

May 4                         “Clothed with Power!”
Ascension Sunday   Acts 1:1-8 and Luke 24:44-53
and Holy Communion     Jesus’ ascension into heaven ensures that we are now clothed with his power to change the world! There are no more excuses. We are sent to the ends of the earth to share the good news of God’s grace in Christ.

May 11                        “One in the Spirit”
Pentecost               I Corinthians 12:4-13 and Acts 2:1-21
No one could have been a more diverse group of people than the earliest Christians! Yet the coming of the Holy Spirit creates of this “motley crew” a beautiful, unified tapestry of love.

May 18                       “For the Transformation of the World”
                                      Habakkuk 2:1-4 and Matthew 28:16-20
As United Methodists, our calling is to “make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” How does Crown Heights’ mission become an expression of this vital call?

May 25                      “The Bondage of Worry”
                                      Psalm 37:1-7, 39-40 and Matthew 6:24-34
Worry, anxiety, fear—no matter what you call it, such feelings and attitudes can certainly rob us of a life lived in trust. Jesus’ friends and neighbors struggled with similar concerns. What wisdom does he offer?

Text Box: Adult Sunday School Class Offerings

Our Sunday School classes begin each week at 9:45, following a time of fellowship with coffee and donuts.

Fishermen Class: This lively group of middle-aged and older adults carefully studies the Bible each week, under the very capable leadership of Judge John Amick. You’ll enjoy his wisdom and dry sense of humor. Currently the class is studying the book of Daniel.

Pyramid Class
The intergenerational Pyramid class generally spends several weeks discussing a topic of mutual interest centered around some kind of reading material, though having read the lesson is never a prerequisite for attending class. Past topics have included: the teachings of German theologian Dietrich Bonhoffer, relating to people of other religions, a history of Christian Ethics (including St. Augustine, Thomas Aquinas and Charles Wesley), the Methodist Social Principles, the life and teachings of Paul, Methodism in the Bible Belt, and strategies for evangelism.

Discovery Class
The Discovery Class is made up of adults from ages 35-60.  We study scripture that follows the lectionary (generally follows the scripture Dianne is preaching on).  The class is a discussion class where we learn from each other and our experiences how to interpret the scriptures to help us in our daily lives to live as God calls us.

Genesis Class
This class is a group of young single and married adults who share our lives and our spiritual journeys with each other through candid class discussions and review of spiritual principles. Our goal is to grow spiritually by learning about God through text as well as each other through experiences and opinions about how the love of God relates to every day life. Our class often gets together outside of church for fellowship and family time. We welcome newcomers and extend our circle of friendship to all.

Text Box: p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. We invite you to come to the Café at 5:30 for great food and fellowship, then stay for Tiffany’s presentation. Bring questions and your friends for this excellent opportunity. We are called to “weep with those who weep, and rejoice with those who rejoice.” Make the time to learn how to journey with those who are living with diminished cognitive abilities, so that they don’t have to be so isolated and lonely. Child care will be available by reservation. Call the church office at 524-8428 by May 23.
